ESP Guidelines – EEPA for the management of formaldehyde

With the reclassification of formaldehyde as a potential carcinogen from category 2/3 to category 1B/2, the European Union intends to ban the use of formaldehyde in 2016. The ESP and the Greek Society of Pathological Anatomy, with the following document, propose solutions in surgeries, endoscopic and pathological laboratories (pre-filled containers and sealing of surgical preparations under vacuum in a closed sealing system), to reduce staff exposure to toxic fumes. Finally, this document formalizes its position on the impossibility of eliminating formaldehyde from histological processing, informing the relevant ministries.
